With the support of the Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion and the University of Toronto Department of Family and Community Medicine, CEP developed and implemented an educational strategy, Responding to pH1N1 in a Primary Care Setting: Your Questions Answered. This strategy included the development of a clinical support tool and learning events to assist family physicians and nurse practitioners respond to the pH1N1 crisis during the Fall/Winter of 2009.

This initiative was unique in that it:

  • Enabled providers to easily access evidence and clinical guidance concerning pH1N1.
  • Two versions of the tools were developed, Ontario and National versions.
  • Reached the majority of primary care physicians and nurse practitioners (~ 15,000) in Ontario in a timely manner.
  • Promoted a coordinated approach, using MOHLTC guidelines and drawing input from other organizations in Ontario.
  • Delivered a multifaceted array of clinical summaries, learning events, and FAQs that were relevant and user-friendly.
  • Was responsive to the ongoing changes to the various recommendations and was able to make edits and revisions to the clinical summary with a quick turnaround time.
  • Distributed this information through key media (print and electronic), allowing for the inclusion of updates as they emerged.
  • Utilized partner organizations to disseminate the information to providers across the country.
